MORGAN HOWELL
Technical Writer. Digital Strategist.
A Little About Me

Hello, and welcome to my digital portfolio! My name is Morgan Howell. I am a graduate of James Madison University (go Dukes!) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Writing, Rhetoric, and Technical Communication and a minor in Health Communication Studies.
Interests
Between my major and minor, I have found I am drawn to digital strategy, health communication, and technical writing.
At the base of all three of these areas is communication and critical thinking. Both are necessary to be able to read information, understand what it means, and communicate it to others.
Experience
As a digital strategist, I have learned how to track, analyze, and recommend strategies for reaching clients’ digital goals. I wrote monthly, narrative-based analytics reports that provided data-driven recommendations, as well as quarterly digital goals progress updates. I also found ways to connect my technical writing background with my digital strategist position. I acted as the in-house grammar expert, proofreading memos and proposals, and ensuring the team’s grammatical uniformity with all internal and external communications.
I previously interned with the State Corporation Commission in Richmond, Virginia. There, I wrote manuals, press releases, newsletter articles, and summarized studies. In addition, I redesigned and rewrote sections of the State Corporation Commission website and attended PR meetings for the Virginia Energy Sense campaign. I’ve also interned as a technical writer with SUNRNR of Virginia (a solar generator company based in Harrisonburg, VA) and as the social media chair at the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, Office of Catholic Education (Richmond, VA).
Skills
Previous educational courses have allowed me to sharpen my professional editing skills in areas that cater to technical manual writing. For example, I had the opportunity to edit a culinary instructional document, changing the document design and adding parallel structure.
Furthermore, I've stayed on the cutting-edge of the principles of web design and digital strategy through work experience and previous coursework. I am continuously learning through certification courses that challenge my knowledge and push me to become a better digital strategist and technical writer. Since I’m a big proponent of working smarter, not harder, I’m often learning about software that increase productivity. For example, instead of manually creating a presentation for the client on their website’s performance, I learned about Google Data Studio and how we can design report templates that automatically pulls the data for our clients. Now, we can focus on the analysis instead of pulling data, saving the client both time and money.
I am not afraid of taking on a project and making it my own. While at Brick Factory, I was responsible for our email marketing and content creation. I consistently added new ideas to the email marketing backlog, always thinking about the next step. I wrote a blog post about 5 strong email subject lines.
I am also familiar with communication theories and have learned strategic ways people communicate. This knowledge has allowed me to develop skills in becoming a more effective and confident communicator both in the verbal and written word.
